Apartment Review
New management, same bad service.

Used to be run by AIMCO now is run by Bethany Group (I think), no change in management style. Built in the mid-80's when there was nothing out there but hills and the city landfill, now surrounded by expanded highways and bordered by the Salado at Walnut Creek complex which should be named the Fence Breakers (the kids and adults would rather break fence boards in the complex fence rather than walk around the property to get to the bus stop). Like passing a kidney stone to get any maintainence crew into the apartment for ANY type of repairs (when they aren't hanging around on balconies having a beer). Some examples: 1) AC units are ancient and they act like it's cool in the apartment at 85 degrees with 90% humidity. Every year the AC was an issue and every year, it took at least 4 visits before they'd get it fixed to last a few months. 2) Foundation and Roof issues, every time it rained harder than a drizzle, our living room would flood. My computer desk was in that corner, it was brand new and was completely ruined by water damage (this was how we discovered there was an issue in that area of the living room). It took them 5 attempted repairs before they got it. They'd say it was fixed, it would rain and flood then we'd get this obnoxious dryer that we had to run all day and night with the stink of mold treatment chemicals all over (combine that with no AC...). 3) Mold is a major problem here (especially the ground level apartments that you pay EXTRA to live in). Not just any mold, BLACK mold. In the bathrooms, the kitchen, the baseboards all throughout the apartment. There is a constant ant and water roach problem, makes morning showers interesting, watch where you step! (I've never once in 7 years seen an exterminator). Onward, you pay extra for a gated community that is rarely gated and never secure; the front gates are continously RAMMED by drunk or plain stupid drivers so the gate is more often than not sitting off kilter and pushed aside to let just anyone in. While we lived there, numerous cars were violently robbed, averaged a car window busted in once a week for awhile there (stereo, what stereo'). The lightning around the buildings were non-existant, it took a girl getting raped 30 ft from the gate of the apartment complex for them to start putting new lightbulbs in (nothing like stepping outside to take out the trash and a police man and his canine walk by telling you to get back in your apt, there's a rapist on the loose). If you're unlucky enough to face the parking lot or live by one of the gate entryways then get used to noise pollution; screaming fights in the parking lot, blaring music as people come and go through the gates, lazy carpoolers that beep their horn incessantly until the person comes out of their apartment to leave with them every morning, and don't forget the unsupervised children that are allowed to run wild and scream at the top of their lungs right outside your bedroom window). Parking is a joke, there's no assigned parking, everyone wants to park up front so if you live at any of the buildings in front, get used to parking your vehicle down the hill next to the pitiful sand volleyball court and picnic area (that also serves as a very large flat drain for flood water). If you're lucky enough to get a nice placement with grass (like building 5), beware the inconsiderate dog owners that let their dogs run back there, do their business, and don't clean up after them (think what excrement smells like basting in the Texas sun and forget about leaving your windows open for a breeze or enjoying your porch to entertain guests). The exercise facility is tiny, the pool is completely unmonitored, a couple having sex was caught in the jacuzzi (turns out one of the couple was the manager of the complex at that time), and don't forget the 4 alarm fire they had a few years ago when some idiot threw his cigrette out in a habachi on his porch then went to bed (the entire building burned to the ground). I lived there for 7 years; it was close to work and my two 45lbs huskies were not welcome in a lot of complexes. My financial situation improved, I bought a house, and I never looked back. Important to note that since I moved, I have not experienced the myriad of health issues I was experiencing while living there in a mold and bug infested apartment, I could not believe how much BETTER I felt physically. There are plenty of newer, cleaner, and safer apartment complexes in Austin that are worth your hard earned dollar. Pass this one up unless you are a glutton for punishment. Update note: Forgot to mention that even though we were told we'd get our deposit back (minus the non-refundable pet payment), we haven't heard or received a thing. It's been 6 months now. |
