Renter Beware - This Apartment Complex Isn't Safe
Review Date: 7/15/2008 Reviewer: Anonymous
Longhorn Landing's marketing material promised a great place to live, great amenities, neighbors, and so forth, but it doesn’t mention the terrible crime in the complex and the surrounding neighborhood. The City of Austin says there are have been three accidental deaths, five aggravated assaults, 33 assaults, 70 burglaries, two rapes, and 31 thefts in Longhorn Landing since April 2006. If you include the shopping center at the corner of Pleasant Valley Road and Riverside Drive, the numbers balloon to 143 assaults, 225 burglaries, six rapes, and 315 thefts! I did not feel safe. I drove across town to find a safe place to buy my groceries and to eat. I felt like I’m going through a war zone when I travel between the apartment and the campus. If I’m out late, I stay elsewhere for the night – including a campus dorm – because I don’t want to drive through the neighborhood. For my parents, the last straw came when a drunk kept bothering girls at the Riverside bus stop on a Saturday afternoon outside the complex. They called the police department and were told they need to get me out of Longhorn Landing as soon as possible and into a safer neighborhood. I asked to be released from my lease without fault and thought we had an agreement to do so. However, a year later I received a letter from a collector demanding immediate payment of $2,000 for deliquent rent! No other prior contact at all! Beware! |
